PROJECT > BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BWMS)
  Background information: With Finland’s acceptance of the Ballast Water Management Convention on September 8th, 2016, the total tonnage of signatory countries has reached 35% of the world's gross tonnage. Ballast Water Convention will come into effect on September 8, 2017. Article D-3 of the International Convention on Ballast Water and Sediments Management and Control sediments stipulates the requirement for the approval of ballast water management systems. Under the provisions of article B-3, the discharge of ballast water must meet the performance standards required in article D-2 before the prescribed time limit. That is, successfully obtain the USCG type approval from IMO or the U.S. Coast Guard within the first IOPP renewal period (5 years) since September 8th, 2017. Ballast Water Management system is very complex, therefore, it can affect many aspects of the ship. When Ballast Water Management system has got type approval, its installation shall be subject to inspection by the classification society to ensure that there is no adverse impact on the safety of the ship and everything is in compliance with the convention.
